إحنا هون في المعبد اليهودي
We are here at the Jewish temple
في منطقة جميرا في دبي
In the Jumeirah area in Dubai
واسم المعبد بوابات الشرق
And the temple's name is Gates of the East
لشو بيرمز يعني هاد الاسم؟
What does this name symbolize?
إلو معنى رمزي يعني
It has a symbolic meaning
مو بس المعبد اسمو بوابات الشرق
Not just the temple is named Gates of the East
الجالية كلا سميناها بوابات الشرق
The whole community we named it Gates of the East
والاسم فيه كم معنى الاسم
And the name has several meanings
معنى أول إنو نحن قاعدين بالشرق
First meaning is that we are sitting in the East
بالدنيا كلا هون الشرق أولاً
In the whole world, here is the East first
وثانياً اليهود دايماً كنا
And secondly, Jews we were always
الساكنين بأمريكا وبالغرب
Living in America and in the West
بس بدنا نصلي منصلّي دايماً عالشرق
But when we pray, we always pray towards the East
مشان هي فين القدس قاعدة
Because that's where Jerusalem is located
ومعنى تالت إنو بوابات الشرق
And a third meaning is Gates of the East
بالبيت المقدس المسكرين
In the Holy Temple that are closed
نحن منآمن بس ما يجي المشيح
We believe that when the Messiah comes
بدو يفوت مع النبي إلياهو
He will enter with the Prophet Elijah
بيفوت من بوابات الشرق
He will enter through the Gates of the East
بقا هول بوابات الشرق
So these are the Gates of the East
يعني اسم ممتاز كتير كتير وعندو معنى حلو كتير
I mean, a very excellent name and it has a very nice meaning
جميل
Beautiful
الجالية اليهودية أو الوجود اليهودي هون في دبي وفي الإمارات
The Jewish community or the Jewish presence here in Dubai and in the UAE
شي جديد وشي خاص واستثنائي
Something new and something special and exceptional
يعني أنا بعتقد سمعت إنو هاي الجالية الوحيدة في العالم العربي
I mean, I think I heard that this is the only community in the Arab world
اللي عم تكبر مو عم تتقلص يعني
That is growing, not shrinking, I mean
فـ يعني إنت بوقت تاريخي هون
So, I mean, you are here at a historic time
احكيلنا شوي عن الجالية يعني والوجود اليهودي هون
Tell us a bit about the community, I mean, and the Jewish presence here
أكيد هون كان في يهود قبل اتفاقات إبراهيم
Certainly, there were Jews here before the Abraham Accords
بس ما كانت جالية مزبطة ومنظمة
But there wasn't a proper and organized community
بعد اتفاقات إبراهيم حتى الحكومة والشعب هون
After the Abraham Accords, even the government and the people here
بدن يكون عندن جالية يهودية منظمة ومع رخصة وكل شي
Wanted to have an organized Jewish community with a license and everything
بقا طلبوني شي أنا كنت زرت هون من تلات سنين
So they asked me, I had visited here three years ago
زرت أول شي الجالية الصغيرة اللي كانت قاعدة هون
I first visited the small community that was here
بعدين كمان زرنا مع صاحب السمو الشيخ محمد بن زايد
Then we also visited with His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed
زرناه بالقصر تبعو بأبو ظبي وجبنالو سفر توراة
We visited him at his palace in Abu Dhabi and brought him a Torah scroll
هدية على روح أبوه الشيخ زايد الله يرحمو
A gift on behalf of his father, Sheikh Zayed, God have mercy on him
وتعرفت عالحكومة تعرفت عالناس تعرفت عالجالية
And I got to know the government, got to know the people, got to know the community
وبس ما صار اتفاقات إبراهيم وبدن يعملوا إنو جالية تكون منظمة مع رخصة
And when the Abraham Accords happened, and they wanted to make a community organized with a license
يعني جالية رسمية كدين كدين اليهودي
I mean, an official community as a religion, as the Jewish religion
طلبوني إجي لهون مشان أنا أصلي من الشرق الأوسط
They asked me to come here because I am from the Middle East
بحكي عربي
I speak Arabic
بعرف القرآن الدين الإسلام
I know the Quran, the religion of Islam
وكنت معلم بيشيفا يونيفرسيتي
And I was a teacher at Yeshiva University
على أيام الوقت اللي كانوا اليهود والإسلام مع بعض ساكنين
During the time when Jews and Islam were living together
اللي هي جامعة يهودية أمريكية في نيويورك صح؟
Which is an American Jewish university in New York, right?
أيوا جامعة يهودية جامعة يشيفا يونيفرسيتي
Yes, a Jewish university, Yeshiva University
أنا كنت مدير المدرسة تبع يعقوب صفرا
I was the principal of the Jacob Safra School
للعلماء السفارديين والشرقيين
For Sephardic and Oriental scholars
طيب إحنا الآن فبراير 2022 إنت موجود هون من إيمتى إجيت؟
Okay, we are now February 2022, when did you come here?

I've been here since November of 2020
يعني إلي سنة وأربع تشهر
I mean, a year and four months
المستمعين والمشاهدين أكيد بيسمعوا إنو لهجتك سورية
Listeners and viewers surely hear that your accent is Syrian
فخلينا نحكي شوي عن سيرتك الشخصية يعني مواليد وين وكيف الحياة؟
So let's talk a bit about your personal history, I mean, where were you born and how was life?
كيف لكان أنا انولدت ببيروت بلبنان
How... I was born in Beirut, Lebanon
أهلي كانوا لاجئين يهود سوريين
My family were Syrian Jewish refugees
اللي هربوا من سوريا سنة الـ 48
Who fled from Syria in 1948
بس ما صار الحرايق الحوادث تبع الحرايق
But before the fires, the incidents of the fires
في عشر بلاد عربية بس ما طلعت مدينة إسرائيل دولة إسرائيل
In ten Arab countries, before the emergence of the State of Israel
صار انجموا عالجالية اليهودية بكل البلاد
They gathered against the Jewish community in all countries
بسوريا بمصر بالعراق بتونس بتونس بكل البلاد العربية عشر بلاد عربية
In Syria, in Egypt, in Iraq, in Tunisia, in Tunisia, in all Arab countries, ten Arab countries
واليهود اللي كانوا ساكنين بسوريا بحلب وبالشام
And the Jews who were living in Syria, in Aleppo and in Damascus
خافوا كتير على حياتن مشان انجموا عليهن طلعوا ضد الكنايس حرقوا الكنايس
Feared greatly for their lives, so they gathered against them, rose against the synagogues, burned the synagogues
وأهلك من حلب؟
And your family is from Aleppo?
أهلي من حلب أهلي من حلب بقا هنن هربوا
My family is from Aleppo, my family is from Aleppo, so they fled
هربوا للبنان وسكنوا في لبنان
They fled to Lebanon and lived in Lebanon
لبنان كانت مدينة متل أوروبا تحت سلطة فرنساويّة
Lebanon was a city like Europe under French authority
وسكنوا بلبنان وأنا خلقت بلبنان
And they lived in Lebanon and I was born in Lebanon
وكانت هناك جالية يهودية ومؤسسات ومدارس؟
And was there a Jewish community and institutions and schools there?
كانت جالية يهودية منظمة كتير كتير مأسسة حلو كتير
It was a very, very organized Jewish community, very well institutionalized
مع مدارس مع معابد يعني كنايس
With schools, with temples, I mean synagogues
كان في تقريباً شي 22 كنيس يهودي
There were approximately 22 Jewish synagogues
كانت في تلات مدارس يهودية كمان
There were three Jewish schools as well
أبي كان حاخام وكان مدير المدرسة كمان اللي تعلمت أنا فيها
My father was a rabbi and was also the principal of the school where I studied
وضليتوا في بيروت لإيمتى؟
And you stayed in Beirut until when?
ضلينا في بيروت لـ 1971
We stayed in Beirut until 1971
مشان عرفنا إنو كمان لبنان رح تنخرب
Because we knew that Lebanon would also be ruined
مشان بس ما شفنا عرفات والفدائيين تبعولو
Because before we saw Arafat and his fedayeen
اللي دشروا من الأردن بيسموه بشهر سبتمبر الأسود
Who entered from Jordan, they call it Black September
كان في حرب بين إخوان بالأردن والملك حسين دشر عرفات والفدائية
There was a war between brothers in Jordan and King Hussein, Arafat and the fedayeen entered
ولبنان جبروها تقبلن بقا استقبلتن استقبلوهن وإجوا للبنان
And Lebanon was forced to accept them, so they welcomed them and they came to Lebanon
وبلشنا نشوف بالشوارع مظاهرات مع الفدائيين
And we started seeing demonstrations in the streets with the fedayeen
وعرفنا إنو البلد كلا بدا تروح بدا يكون في حرب إخوان كمان هونيك
And we knew that the whole country started to go, started to be in a fraternal war there too
وعرفنا إنو الجالية اليهودية بدا تتأثر كتير فيها كتير كتير
And we knew that the Jewish community started to be greatly affected, very, very much
وفعلاً؟
Really?
وفعلاً كان بس ما تركنا بعد تلات سنين أقل كمان بلش الحرب بلبنان
Really, just after we left, after three years less, the war started in Lebanon
والجالية اليهودية كمان انجبرت تهرب وتروح وفي كم منهن انقتلوا انقتلوا
And the Jewish community was also forced to flee and go, and some of them were killed, were killed
كتير منهن راح على أمريكا؟
Many of them went to America?
كتير منهن راحوا على أمريكا
Many of them went to America
راحوا على مكسيك نحن أهلي راحوا على مكسيك
They went to Mexico, my family went to Mexico
في كتير منهن راحوا لفرنسا ولإيطاليا ولكندا وفي كمان راحوا لإسرائيل
Many of them went to France, to Italy, and to Canada, and some also went to Israel
مشان كنا لاجئين ما كان عنا جواز لبناني ولا جواز سوري
Because we were refugees, we didn't have a Lebanese passport or a Syrian passport
كنا بيسمونا ستايتلس لاجئين بلا دولة بلا دولة
They called us stateless, refugees without a state, without a state
وبس ما تركنا لبنان مختوم كان عالمش جواز جواز رسمي
And when we left Lebanon, stamped on it was a passport, an official passport
ليسيه باسيه كانوا بيسموها روحة بلا رجعة
Laissez-passer, they called it a one-way trip
واو
Wow
يعني كنا بنقدر نطلع من البلد بس ما بنقدر نرجع مشان كنا لاجئين
I mean, we could leave the country but we couldn't return because we were refugees
يعني الواحد صار بلا وطن فجأة بلا وطن كنا بلا صح كنا مضبوط كنا بلا وطن
I mean, one suddenly became stateless, stateless, we were without, yes, we were exactly, we were stateless
والقصة إنو نحن تركنا كمان سنة الـ 71
And the story is that we left also in 1971
مشان قبل بكم شهر طلعت صورة أبي مع تلات الحاخامات
Because a few months before, a picture of my father came out with three rabbis
كان في تلات حاخامات تبع البيت الديني أبي كان واحد منهن
There were three rabbis from the religious house, my father was one of them
طلعت صورة ومن تحتها مكتوب هون الصهيونية اللي بيساعدوا دولة إسرائيل
A picture came out and under it was written here are the Zionists who help the State of Israel
ومش كانت كذب كلا كذب بس بتعرف عشان يبرروا يعني الخطوات
And it wasn't a lie, no lie, but you know, to justify, I mean, the steps
أيوا بقا صار خطر كتير على كل حياتو أهلي أكيد وكل العائلة
Yes, so it became very dangerous for his whole life, my family certainly, and the whole family
وكمان عائلة تبع كل الجالية اليهودية فاتت بخطر
And also the family of the whole Jewish community came into danger
بس ما واحد يقول الحاخامات تبع الجالية هن صهيونية ببلد عربي يعني خطر كتير
Because if someone says the rabbis of the community are Zionists in an Arab country, I mean, very dangerous
بقا كمان جربنا نهرب من لبنان ووصلنا لمكسيك وعشنا بمكسيك
So we also tried to flee from Lebanon and we reached Mexico and we lived in Mexico
وإنت كملت دراساتك؟ كملت دراساتي بمكسيك يونيفرسيتي
And you completed your studies? I completed my studies at Mexico University
وكيف قررت إنك تكون طبيب دكتور؟
And how did you decide to be a doctor?
كل حياتي كنت بدي أكون طبيب من كان عمري خمس ست سنين أشتهي أكون طبيب
All my life I wanted to be a doctor, from when I was five, six years old I wished to be a doctor
مشان لما كنت صغير كنت أمرض كتير أزمة ورشح وهي
Because when I was small I got sick a lot, asthma and colds and such
بقا قلت لو في حكيم بالعائلة مو ضروري
So I said if there is a doctor in the family, it's not necessary
بنص الليل أهلي يطلعوا
In the middle of the night my family would go out
يروحوا يفتشوا على حكيم
Go look for a doctor
بهديك الأيام ما كان في تليفونات ما كان في تكستينغ ما كان في هيدي
In those days there were no telephones, no texting, none of this
بقا كان صعب واحد يروح يدبر الحكيم بقا قلت إذا كان في شي حكيم بالعائلة أهون
So it was hard for one to go arrange a doctor, so I said if there is a doctor in the family, it's easier
أها اليوم إنت حاخام كمان إيمتى بلشت هالمسيرة يعني مع الحاخامية؟
Ah, today you are a rabbi too, when did you start this journey, I mean with the rabbinate?
طيب أبي حاخام وأنا جاي من سلسلة حاخاميم من أكتر من 500 سنة من سفاراد من الأندلس
Well, my father was a rabbi and I come from a chain of rabbis for more than 500 years from Sepharad, from Andalusia
يعني أصلي من الأندلس أصل عائلتي من 500 سنة من الأندلس
I mean, I am originally from Andalusia, my family origin is 500 years from Andalusia
كان في حاخام تقريباً بكل جيل بقا أبي كان حاخام جيل بعد جيل
There was a rabbi in almost every generation, so my father was a rabbi, generation after generation
جيل بعد جيل كانوا حاخاميم بقا قلت لازم
Generation after generation they were rabbis, so I said I must
أنا أكون كمان حاخام
I be a rabbi too
مشان بدي أكمل هالسلسلة
Because I want to complete this chain
الحاخاميم اللي في عائلتي وبس بعدين وبس بدي أشتغل كطب
The rabbis who are in my family, and then, and then I want to work as a doctor
بس حاخام بس لأتعلم وأتعرف وأعرف كل قوانين الدين
But a rabbi, just to learn and know and know all the laws of the religion
اليوم إنت موجود هون في الإمارات وهناك رابطة جديدة منصب جديد منظمة جديدة
Today you are here in the UAE and there is a new association, a new position, a new organization
ممكن تحكي شو اسمها أولاً؟
Can you tell us what its name is first?
بقلك بقا بس ما وصلت أنا لهون بنوفمبر عام 2020
I'll tell you, when I arrived here in November 2020
انتبهت إنو في أول شي كمان جالية يهودية بالبحرين صغيرة بس في وإلا 140 سنة
I noticed that first there is also a Jewish community in Bahrain, small but there, about 140 years
وكمان انتبهت في يهود بالمدينات بالخليج يعني بسعودية بعمان بقطر بالكويت
And I also noticed there are Jews in the Gulf cities, I mean in Saudi, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait
هن رجال أعمال معظمهم؟
Are they mostly businessmen?
رجال أعمال رجال يعني علماء كمان وما عندن جالية ومنن منظمين كجالية
Businessmen, men, I mean scholars too, and they don't have a community and they aren't organized as a community
بقا افتكرت قلت لازم نساعدن لازم نقربن لعنا
So I thought, I said we must help them, we must bring them closer to us
ونحن على كل حال بالخليج عم كيف عم نقول عم نبلش حياة جديدة وعم نبلش مستقبل جديد
And we are anyway in the Gulf, how do we say, starting a new life and starting a new future
بكل هالمنطقة تبع الخليج بقا تفاهمت وسألت ومع الجالية اليهودية بالبحرين
In all this Gulf region, so I coordinated and asked and with the Jewish community in Bahrain
سيد إبراهيم نونو وهدى نونو قلنا لازم نبلش
Mr. Ibrahim Nono and Huda Nono, we said we must start
رابطة تنقدر نساعد اليهود
An association that can help the Jews
الساكنين بغير بلاد
Living in other countries
ونقدر نساعد بعضنا مشان إذا في جالية ما عندها ما بتقدر تساوي حسبي شغلة
And we can help each other, because if there is a community that doesn't have, it can't do a thing like this
نحن بنقدر نساعدن وهي وبلشنا رابطة سميناها رابطة الجاليات اليهودية في الخليج
We can help them, and so we started an association, we named it the Association of Jewish Communities in the Gulf
بلشناها بفبراير 2021
We started it in February 2021
واو جديدة يعني جديدة وإلا هلا بدنا نساوي عيدنا السنة الجمعة الجاية
Wow, new, I mean new, or now we will celebrate our anniversary next Friday
أنا كمان جيت هون من تلات سنين
I also came here three years ago
كنت عم بحكيلك
I was telling you
جبنا التوراة سفر توراة للجالية هون وتعرفت عليهن عمل كان بعيد بوريم
We brought the Torah, a Torah scroll for the community here and got to know them, it was around Purim
وعملنا حفلة بالفيلا كمان عالسكوت بس الحكومة كانت تعرف عليها ومباركتنا
And we had a party at the villa too, quietly, but the government knew about it and blessed us
وكل شي يعني بس ما كان شي منظم ورسمي بس ما صار اتفاقات إبراهيم هو الحكومة هون
And everything, I mean, but there was nothing organized and official, before the Abraham Accords, the government here
كان بدا نساوي إنو جالية رسمية
Was starting to make an official community
منظمة مع رخصة
Organized with a license
وهيدي اللي تغيير السياسة اتغير كتير
And this is where the policy changed a lot
مو بس بهالدولة
Not just in this state
بس كمان بالخليج كلو هلا صار وفي خطط يعني لتطوير الرابطة والوجود يعني؟
But also in the whole Gulf, now it happened and there are plans, I mean, to develop the association and the presence, I mean?
أكيد أكيد في خطط بدنا نعمر بدنا نعمر أول شي بدنا نعمر معبد يعني معبد مخصص
Certainly, certainly there are plans, we want to build, we want to build, first we want to build a temple, I mean a dedicated temple
وبدنا نعمر كل المؤسسات المؤسسات لجالية تقدر تعيش وتكبر وتتقدم
And we want to build all the institutions, institutions for a community to live and grow and advance
