أبي كان صايغ. عنده محل في سوق الصياغين. يوم اللي صارت المظاهرات

My father was a goldsmith. He had a shop in the Goldsmiths' Souq. The day the demonstrations happened

وراح والدي مع شغّيل يشتغل عنده أرمني

And my father went with an employee who worked for him, an Armenian

على السوق اللي كان مسكر. دخل على المحل تبعه

To the market which was closed. He entered his shop

اخذوا كل الصيغة اللي عنده اياها، وراحوا برّات السوق فيه بنك

They took all the gold he had, and they went outside the market there was a bank

استأجر صندوق حديد في بنك أودي روما وحط البضاعة

He rented a safe in Bank Audi Roma and put the merchandise

بصندوق الحديد. وأجى على البيت تعبان

In the safe. And he came home tired

وقال كلمة، جملة ما بننساها نحن في بيتنا:

And he said a word, a sentence we never forget in our house:

"اليوم رحت سرقت محلي"

"Today I went and robbed my own shop"

"دخلت على محلي مثل حرامي سرقت محلي"

"I entered my shop like a thief and robbed my own shop"

وهذه كانت أول ديسمبر 1947

And this was the first of December 1947
