كان يا ما كان
Once upon a time,
واحد
كندرجي
شاطر
اسمه
حنين.
There was a clever shoemaker named Haneen.
حنين
هاد كان
زلمة
مبدع
فنان
This Haneen was a creative artist,
وكان
يصمم
ويعمل
كنادر
حلوة
And he used to design and make beautiful shoes,
مع
جودة
ممتازة.
With excellent quality.
مشان هيك
Because of this,
كان ييجي
لعنده
زباين
من
كل الأنحاء،
Customers would come to him from all over,
مع إنه
كان معروف
ببضاعته
الغالية.
Even though he was known for his expensive goods.
يوم من الأيام
One day,
كان فيه
هالبدوي
راجع
من السفر
There was this Bedouin returning from a journey,
ومحمل
معاه أغراض
على جمله،
Carrying goods with him on his camel.
وهو ماشي
في الطريق،
While he was walking on the road,
شاف متجر حنين ملان ناس
He saw Haneen's shop full of people,
ومليان بضاعة حلوة.
And full of beautiful merchandise.
فدخل على المتجر
So he entered the shop,
وانبسط كتير من البضاعة المعروضة،
And was very pleased with the displayed goods,
وصار بده يشتري كندرة.
And he wanted to buy a pair of shoes.
لما سمع هالبدوي سعر الكندرة انصدم
When this Bedouin heard the price of the shoes, he was shocked,
وبلش يفاصل بحنين لمدة طويلة،
And started bargaining with Haneen for a long time.
ومرة يحكيله هاي سعرها غالي
One time telling him "this price is expensive,"
ومرة يقول له إنت زلمة ما بدك تبيع.
And another time telling him "you're a man who doesn't want to sell."
وهيك بقيوا حنين وهالزلمة يفاصلوا بعض كتير وقت،
And so Haneen and this man kept bargaining with each other for a long time,
وكل هاد الوقت حنين ما كان معطي إنتباهه
And all this time, Haneen wasn't paying attention
لولا حدا من زباينه
To any of his customers
إلي إجوا على متجره عشان يشتروا.
Who came to his shop to buy.
وهيك ضوع عليه مبلغ كبير
And so he lost a large sum
كان ممكن يربحه في هداك النهار.
That he could have earned that day.
المهم،
Anyway,
بعد شي ساعة من الحكي والرغي والمفاصلة،
After about an hour of talking, chattering, and bargaining,
اتفقوا التنين على سعر بيرضي الطرفين.
They both agreed on a price that satisfied both parties.
فراح حنين يجهز الكندرة
So Haneen went to prepare the shoes
إلي كان بده إياها البدوي.
That the Bedouin wanted.
وإلا بشوف إنه الزلمة مسك حاله
But then he saw that the man took himself
وطلع من المتجر من غير ما يوخذ الكندرة
And left the shop without taking the shoes,
ولا يدفع حقها.
Nor paying for them.
حنين إنجن وعصب كتير
Haneen went crazy and got very angry,
لإن بسبب هاد الزلمة ضوع وقت ومصاري كتير.
Because of this man, he wasted a lot of time and money.
فقرر إنه ينتقم منه،
So he decided to get revenge on him,
ولهيك طلع من متجره
And so he left his shop,
ومعاه الكندرة إلي كان بده إياها البدوي،
With him were the shoes that the Bedouin wanted,
وصار يلحق فيه من غير ما هداك ينتبهه له.
And he started following him without the other noticing him.
وبعد شوي حنين سبق البدوي
And after a while, Haneen overtook the Bedouin,
وحط في نص الطريق فردة واحدة من الكندرة
And placed one single shoe in the middle of the road,
وراح اتخبى.
And went and hid.
لما وصل البدوي لهناك
When the Bedouin arrived there,
وشاف فردة الكندرة في نص الطريق،
And saw the single shoe in the middle of the road,
استغرب كتير وانبسط
He was very surprised and happy,
وقال لنفسه:
And said to himself:
"هاي واحدة من كنادر حنين،
"This is one of Haneen's shoes,
مثل إلي كان بدي إياها.
Like the one I wanted.
خليني آخدها."
Let me take it."
بس بعدين راجع حاله
But then he reconsidered,
وفكر إنه مش راح يستفيد
And thought that he wouldn't benefit
بفردة واحدة من الكندرة.
From just one shoe.
عشان هيك تركها وكمل طريقه.
That's why he left it and continued his way.
بعد مية متر لقدام
After a hundred meters ahead,
شاف البدوي الفردة التانية مرمية بنص الطريق.
The Bedouin saw the second shoe thrown in the middle of the road.
ففكر وقال لنفسه:
So he thought and said to himself:
"أحسن لي أرجع لورا
"It's better for me to go back
وين ما كانت الفردة الأولى
To where the first shoe was
عشان آخدها وتصير معي الكندرة كاملة."
So I can take it and have the complete pair of shoes with me."
وبالفعل أخد البدوي الفردة التانية،
And indeed, the Bedouin took the second shoe,
خلى جمله وبضاعته وكل أغراضه هناك في نص الطريق
He left his camel, his goods, and all his belongings there in the middle of the road,
ورجع لورا يجيب الفردة الأولى.
And went back to get the first shoe.
حنين إلي كان متخبي وعم بيراقب البدوي،
Haneen, who was hiding and watching the Bedouin,
انبسط إنه قدر يخدع البدوي.
Was happy that he managed to trick the Bedouin.
ودغري بس راح البدوي يمشي
And as soon as the Bedouin started walking
بطريقه للفردة الأولى،
On his way to the first shoe,
راح حنين وأخد كل أغراض هالبدوي،
Haneen went and took all of this Bedouin's belongings,
وحتى إنه أخد له جمله، وما خلالوش إشي.
He even took his camel, and left him nothing.
لما رجع البدوي يوخذ غراضه من نص الطريق،
When the Bedouin returned to take his belongings from the middle of the road,
ما لاقاش إشي وفهم إنه تعرض للسرقة.
He found nothing and understood that he had been robbed.
وهيك رجع على بيته بدون إشي،
And so he returned to his home with nothing,
بيمشي إيد لقدام وإيد لورا.
Walking empty-handed.
بس كان فيه بإجره كندرة حنين.
But he had Haneen's shoe on his foot.
وهيك صار يضرب المثل
And so the proverb began to be used
بكل واحد بيرجع بخيبة أمل وما معه إشي،
For anyone who returns with disappointment and nothing with them,
وبيقولوا عنه زي إلي رجع بخفي حنين.
And they say about him: "Like one who returned with Haneen's two shoes."
