and basically I'm not a teacher,
وأكيد يعني أنا ما كنت إشتغل
and surely I wasn't working
بهيدا المجال، ما كنت علم عربي،
in this field, I wasn't teaching Arabic,
كنت إشتغل شي تاني مختلف،
I was working something else different,
شي تاني غير، غير كلياً،
something else other, completely other,
كلياً غير.

فما رح نحكي هلا عن هيدا الموضوع

لأنه موضوع كتير طويل،

فأنا تركت شغلي القديم
So I left my old job
من شي من شي سنة ونص،

ولما صار عمري تلاتين، تلاتين سنة،

صار عندي شي 25 تلميذ،
I had about 25 students,
يعني عدد كتير كبير.
I mean a very big number.
فأنا أكيد انبسطت كتير ويعني تفاجأت،
So I surely enjoyed it very much and I was surprised,
ما بعرف كيف هيدا الشي صار،
I don't know how this thing happened,
وكل التلاميذ كانوا يقولوا لي
and all the students were telling me
وهلا يعني بعدهم عم بيقولوا لي،
and now I mean they still tell me,
لأنه أنا هلا بعدني عم بشتغل بهيدا الشي،
because I'm still working on this thing now,
فـ إنه إنه حلو كيف أنتِ عم تعلمي عربي
that it's nice how you're teaching Arabic
ونحن كتير عم نفهم ومبسطين بالدروس،
and we understand a lot and we're happy with the lessons,
فـ إنه يعني كانت ردة الفعل،

And after a while I'm speaking with the students
وعم قول لهم أنتو هلا صرتوا تعرفوا
and I'm telling them you now you know
كتير كلمات وبتعرفوا كتير أشياء بالعربي،
many words and you know many things in Arabic,
هلا صار وقت إنه تبلشوا تسمعوا،
now it's time to start listening,
تسمعوا أي شي بالعربي،
listen to anything in Arabic,
فتحضروا شي على التي في، مسلسل،
prepare something on TV, a series,
أو أي شي يعني.
or anything I mean.
فكل التلاميذ صاروا يقولوا لي
So all the students started telling me
إنه إنه ما عم نلاقي، ما عم نلاقي يعني ما في،
that we can't find, we can't find I mean there isn't,
أو إنه يمكن في فيديوز بدون ترجمة
or that maybe there are videos without translation
للإنجلش ما عم نفهم،
to English we don't understand,

so this thing doesn't help us much.

وإذا أنتو ما عم تسمعوا شي بالعربي،

I mean the correct Arabic, the proper one,
مش هيدي اللهجة العامية أو اللهجة اللبنانية.
not this colloquial dialect or the Lebanese dialect.
مش مشكلة، أنتو فيكن تقرأوا ترجمة
No problem, you can read a translation
على هيدا الفيديو مثلاً أو على البودكاست،

but they didn't know that we here
إن كان بلبنان أو بسوريا أو بفلسطين،

that we don't speak in this Modern Standard Arabic,
ما بنستعمل هيدي اللغة لنحكي كل يوم،
we don't use this language to speak every day,
بنحكي باللهجة، يعني عندنا لهجات مختلفة،
we speak in dialect, I mean we have different dialects,
لهجة بلبنان، لهجة بسوريا،
a dialect in Lebanon, a dialect in Syria,
هلا لبنان، سوريا، فلسطين، الأردن،
now Lebanon, Syria, Palestine, Jordan,
هيدي كلها تعتبر لهجة وحدة
all these are considered one dialect
وبيسموها اللهجة الشامية،
and they call it the Levantine dialect,
لأنه كتير كتير قريبة لبعضها،
because they are very very close to each other,
بس نحن بلبنان يعني شوي شوي صغيرة
but we in Lebanon I mean a bit a bit small
لهجتنا أنعم، ناعمة،
our dialect is softer, smooth,
فـ شوي صغيرة مختلفة يعني
so a bit a bit different I mean
عن اللهجة السورية والأردنية والفلسطينية.
from the Syrian and Jordanian and Palestinian dialect.

I mean his family, or we say his uncle's house,
يعني أنا عندي لنقول عندي تلميذة،
I mean I have let's say I have a student,
فهي زوجها، بي زوجها اسمه بيكون عمها،
so her husband, her husband's name would be her uncle,
نحن بنقول عمها، فاذر إن لو،
we say her uncle, father-in-law,
عمها يعني مش خي بيها،
her uncle I mean not her brother,
عمها يعني بي زوجها.
her uncle I mean her husband's father.
فعشان هيك نحن بنقول بيت عمها،
So that's why we say his uncle's house,
يعني إن لوز، أوكي؟ بيت عمها.
I mean in-laws, okay? His uncle's house.
فهي هيدي التلميذة وغيرها
So this is the student and others
عم يتعلموا عربي لأنه بدهم يحكوا
are learning Arabic because they want to speak
مع بيت عمهم باللهجة اللبنانية،
with his uncle's house in the Lebanese dialect,
لأنه بيت عمهم ما بيحكوا بالإنجليزي،
because his uncle's house doesn't speak in English,
